the canadian dental care plan explained
Need teeth cleaning in Langley? Here’s a quick overview of the CDCP.
As a boutique team of dental hygienists focussed on whitening and teeth cleaning in Langley, we have good news: the Canadian Dental Care Plan is set to improve access to dental services across the country. Here’s a quick overview of what you need to know about this important initiative.
What Is the Canadian Dental Care Plan?
The Canadian Dental Care Plan is a government initiative that aims to provide affordable dental care to Canadians who lack coverage. This plan ensures that everyone, regardless of income level, has access to essential dental services.
Who Will Benefit?
The plan primarily targets low- to middle-income families, children, seniors, and individuals with disabilities who often face barriers to dental care. By covering preventive and essential dental services, the plan aims to reduce overall healthcare costs and improve the quality of life for many Canadians.
What Services Are Covered?
The Canadian Dental Care Plan will cover a range of services, including:
- Routine check-ups and teeth cleaning (both available at Risette!)
- X-rays and diagnostic services
- Fillings and extractions
- Emergency dental care
- Preventive treatments like fluoride applications and sealants
How to Access the Plan
Eligible individuals can access the plan by applying through Canada.ca to receive coverage through the insurance provider SunLife of Canada. At this time, treatment costs are only covered by participating dental clinics. Be sure to search the CDCP Provider Search to find a clinic that accepts coverage.
Dental costs are typically based on Fee Guides. In BC, most dental clinics use the BC Dental Fee Guide or the BC Dental Hygienist Fee Guide. The CDCP, a federal program, has set its own fee guide – the CDCP Fee Guide. Unfortunately, at this time, the fees are significantly lower than the BCD/BCDH Fee Guides, which has resulted in many dental offices not participating in the program or requiring a co-pay from the patient.
Why Is This Important?
Access to affordable dental care is crucial for overall health and well-being. Poor oral health can lead to serious health issues, including heart disease and diabetes. Good oral health improves our overall health, self-esteem and, confidence, and quality of life. By making dental care more accessible, the Canadian Dental Care Plan aims to improve public health and reduce healthcare disparities.
Accessibility is part of our ethos at Risette. We are proud to be a participating dental provider, and in our commitment to accessibility, we have opted to adopt the CDCP fee guide for eligible patients to further reduce our eligible patient’s out-of-pocket expenses.
