New Year’s Resolutions for Better Dental Health

Fresh year, fresher smiles!

As we step into a brand-new year, it’s the perfect time to set goals that will improve our health and well-being. While many people focus on fitness or diet-related resolutions, one often overlooked but equally important area is dental health. A healthy smile is not just about looking great; it’s also a cornerstone of overall health.

Here are some practical and achievable New Year’s resolutions to help you maintain a bright and healthy smile:

1. Brush and Floss Daily

Starting healthy habits takes time, and there is no better time than in the new year! It might sound simple, but committing to proper brushing and flossing habits can make a significant difference in your oral health.

Try to brush your teeth at least twice a day using fluoride toothpaste and floss daily to remove plaque and food particles from between your teeth and under your gums.  Remember that it is not about being “perfect” – our take home message to our patients is always that consistency is key to building healthy habits.

2. Schedule Regular Dental Checkups

Make it a point to schedule in routine professional dental cleanings and checkups. Regular dental visits can help catch potential problems early and ensure that your teeth and gums stay in top condition.

At Risette, we want to make routine dental cleanings affordable, convenient, and something you can look forward to. With transparent pricing and a no-pressure approach to treatment planning, we believe we can help make dental care in Langley more accessible.

3. Cut Back on Sugary Foods and Drinks

Sugary snacks and beverages can lead to cavities and tooth decay. Not to mention, they do very little to support healthy nutrition.

This year, resolve to reduce your intake of simple-carbohydrate-rich treats, especially when snacking or sipping between meals. Limiting simple carbohydrates in favour of complex carbohydrates is a great way to protect your dental health and prevent future problems.

4. Quit Smoking

If you’re a smoker, quitting can be one of the best decisions you make for your oral and overall health. Smoking increases the risk of gum disease, tooth loss, and even oral cancer. Seek support from friends, family, or smoking cessation programs to help you achieve this goal.

5. Drink More Water

Staying hydrated is not only good for your body but also for your teeth. Water helps wash away food particles and bacteria, and drinking fluoridated water can strengthen your enamel. Water is an essential part of good dental care.

6. Invest in Your Oral Hygiene Tools

Consider upgrading your toothbrush to an electric model for a more effective clean. Replace your toothbrush or brush head every three months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed. Don’t forget to add an antimicrobial mouthwash to your oral hygiene routine for extra protection against bacteria.

7. Protect your Teeth from Trauma

If you clench and grind your teeth, especially at night, consider wearing a nightguard. Custom-fitted nightguards protect teeth from chips and breaks and also helps to protect our joints (TMJ) and relieve muscle soreness. If you already have one – get in the habit of wearing it nightly! If you don’t have one – asks us how we can have one custom made for you.

For those active in sports, wear a mouthguard to prevent dental injuries. Custom-fitted sportguards provide the best protection and comfort, so if you don’t have one, we can arrange to have one made for you. Dental safety is crucial for athletes of all ages.

8. Brighten Your Smile

Looking to boost your confidence in the new year? Let’s talk about how professional teeth whitening treatments can help! A bright smile can transform your appearance and self-esteem.

9. Educate Your Family

Make dental health a family affair. Teach your kids proper brushing and flossing techniques and lead by example. Family dental care is a key part of building good habits. Don’t forget to make sure seniors in your life are getting the care they need, too!

All ages are welcome at Risette. Consider checking the eligibility for your children, seniors, or those with disabilities to see if they are eligible for dental coverage with the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP).

10. Manage Stress

Stress can take a toll on your oral health, leading to issues like teeth grinding (bruxism) and gum disease. Practice stress-relieving activities such as yoga, meditation, or exercise to keep your mind and mouth healthy. Reducing stress is essential for your overall well-being.
